James Patterson, Chris Tebbetts, Laura Park: 9. Amazon. com: Books. Starting middle school can be rough on anybody, but for Rafe Khatchadorian, the sixth grade escalates into an absolute nightmare. First of all, his middle school resembles an ancient, high security prison. Secondly, it's staffed with angry monsters, like the dragon lady who teaches English, the three witches in the cafeteria, the ogre gym teacher, and the principal named the Lizard King.
Thirdly, there's a nine- foot- tall troll of a sixth grader called Miller the Killer who is out to get him. Things aren't much better at home, with a bratty younger sister, a mom who works all the time, and a soon- to- be stepfather who sits around the house hogging the TV and is as much of a bully as Miller the Killer. At least Rafe has his best friend, Leo, who doesn't say much but has a great imagination. In fact, Leo is the one who gave him the best idea ever.
To spice things up, Rafe creates a game with the goal of breaking every rule in the middle school's code of conduct handbook. He assigns points to each rule, with bonus points available for creativity, getting laughs and being witnessed by the cutest girl in the class, Jeanne Galletta. Life definitely gets more exciting, but Rafe also starts spending a lot more time in detention, and his mom is very disappointed in him. Then the trouble and heartache start mounding up so heavily on Rafe's shoulders where even his best friend can't help much. When the police get called in, Rafe finally crumbles.
Then he gets some help from a very unexpected someone, and life promises to continue being interesting, but in a different, more positive way. James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts team up for this amazing adventure about one boy's attempt at surviving middle school. The first thing that stands out is how absolutely hilarious the book is. Rafe is a very likable character, and readers will love laughing along with him. His rule- breaking game is incredibly imaginative and dives headfirst into the danger zone again and again. Rafe does have to face the consequences of his actions, though he does attract the attention of someone who helps him find a way to work through his issues.
This unique and fast moving storyline also has a couple of surprise bombs dropped along the way that make it even more compelling. Also noteworthy are the intensely detailed illustrations of Laura Park.
They support the story line as they are the work of Rafe's friend, Leo, plus they add even more humor to the story. Patterson, Tebbetts and Park make a great team, and the proof is right here in MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE.- -- Reviewed by Chris Shanley- Dillman.

In particular, parents may not care for the underlying message of this comedy which charts â with glowing approval â its protagonistâs revolt against scholastic authority.
Naturally, the script â penned by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer and Kara Holden â gives Rafe Khatchadorian (Griffin Gluck) an ostensibly good reason for his rebellion. Having been shown the door at two previous institutions, artistically gifted but mildly troubled Rafe lands at Hills Village Middle School only to find it ruled by rigid Principal Dwight (Andy Daly) and his excessively restrictive code of conduct: No wearing this or that item of clothing, no loitering in the halls, no touching the trophy case, etc.
Rafe is aided in planning and executing his stunts by his best friend, Leo (Thomas Barbusca).
Heâs also supported, in his results at least, by Jeanne (Isabela Moner), the sprightly classmate for whom he has fallen, though sheâs not in on the secret of whoâs behind the hijinks.
The opening scene has shown us that Rafe likes to stay awake all night drawing, and the fact that he and Leo now pass the wee hours carrying out their low- key deviltry will raise another red flag for grownups.
Despite the benign nature of much of Rafeâs uprising, director Steve Carrâs screen version of James Patterson and Chris Tebbettsâ novel does briefly veer into endorsing vandalism. This arises in connection with Rafeâs domestic troubles.
His sympathetic mom, Jules (Lauren Graham), has agreed to marry â and, from the time of the engagement, has already shacked up with â her creep of a boyfriend, Carl (Rob Riggle).
As the audience figures out long before Jules ever does, Carlâs true love is his expensive sports car. Thus this vehicle becomes a target in Rafe and his younger sister Georgiaâs (Alexa Nisenson) war on Carl, a battle that parallels the one Rafe is waging at school.
As the live action alternates with animated sequences â Rafeâs cartoon sketches come to life â much of the juvenile humor hovers at the level of a routine sitcom episode. Perhaps surprisingly, the filmâs dramatic elements, by contrast, are handled deftly and to poignant effect.
Even this asset entails another warning to parents, though, since the serious part of the story revolves around the death from cancer, before the movie starts, of Rafeâs younger brother.
All told, while âMiddle Schoolâ is probably acceptable for older teens, their juniors should only be given permission to see it after very careful consideration â if at all.
The film contains cohabitation, youthful defiance of authority, mature themes, including the death of a child, much scatological humor, a handful of crass terms, some wordplay and brief sexual references. The Catholic News Service classification is A- III â adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG â parental guidance suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children.
